Two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt is set to make a special return to competitive tennis—this time alongside his 16-year-old son, Cruz. The former world No. 1 will team up with Cruz in the doubles draw at the New South Wales Open ATP Challenger event on Wednesday.
Hewitt, 44, won the U.S. Open in 2001 and Wimbledon in 2002, becoming the youngest male player to achieve the world No. 1 ranking at the age of 20. Known for his relentless competitiveness and never-say-die attitude, Hewitt dominated men’s tennis in the early 2000s and played a key role in Australia’s Davis Cup victories in 1999 and 2003.
Although he officially retired from professional singles in 2016, Hewitt has remained active in Australian doubles tournaments and currently serves as Australia’s Davis Cup captain. His commitment to the sport, both on and off the court, has made him a beloved figure in Australian tennis.
The father-and-son pairing will face Australians Hayden Jones and Pavle Marinkov in a late afternoon match at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney, offering fans a rare and heartwarming glimpse of Hewitt back on court with family. Cruz is one of three children Hewitt has with his wife, former Australian actress Bec Hewitt.
This marks a memorable comeback for Hewitt, proving that even in retirement, the love for the game—and family—can bring a champion back to the court.
