Bhubaneswar: Odisha is leaving no stone unturned ahead of the highly anticipated India vs South Africa T20 series, with the first match scheduled at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on December 9. The stadium has a notable history, having last hosted a T20 international in 2022, also featuring India vs South Africa, and the India vs England ODI, which had briefly turned controversial due to a floodlight outage that caused a few minutes’ delay. Officials have assured that this time, all power and lighting systems will be fully monitored to prevent any such issues.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi Wednesday chaired a preparatory meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan to review arrangements and advised the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) and state administration to ensure flawless execution, maintaining Odisha’s reputation for hosting international sports events.
Highlighting cricket’s immense popularity in India, the Chief Minister emphasized that millions of fans nationwide and globally will be watching, and every measure must be taken to ensure smooth management and uphold Odisha’s prestige.
During the meeting, OCA Secretary Sanjay Behera presented a detailed plan covering ticketing, spectator facilities, uninterrupted stadium lighting, fire safety, parking, traffic management, and other logistics. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of foolproof security, especially in light of recent incidents elsewhere in the country, and instructed police authorities to remain extra vigilant.
A green corridor will be maintained for emergencies, and all crowd control, ticketing, and medical arrangements will be closely supervised to guarantee smooth operations. Continuous lighting will be ensured through multiple backup gensets with real-time monitoring, so that any power disruption will be automatically compensated.
The meeting was attended by senior officials including Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, DGP Y.B. Khurania, Minister for Sports and Youth Services Suryabanshi Suraj, OCA President Pankaj Lochan Mohanty, and several top police and administrative officers, all coordinating to ensure the match runs seamlessly.
India and South Africa share a long and competitive cricketing history across formats. T20 clashes between the two teams are known for fast scoring, aggressive gameplay, and thrilling finishes. South Africa’s strength lies in fast bowlers and disciplined fielding, while India boasts deep batting line-ups and tactical play.
The official squad for the T20 series has not been announced yet, but it is expected that India will field the same team that recently played in the Australia T20 series, featuring in‑form players such as Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, among others.
Fans can expect an intense opening T20 clash at Barabati Stadium, with both teams bringing a blend of recent form and seasoned talent. Odisha officials are determined to ensure that no repeat of the past floodlight issue occurs, guaranteeing a smooth and world-class cricketing experience.
The stadium has previously hosted memorable matches, including the India vs South Africa T20 in 2022 and the India vs England ODI, which saw a brief floodlight outage. The upcoming T20 match on December 9, 2025, will mark the return of international cricket to this iconic venue, promising fans a safe and exciting experience.
