Bhubaneswar: Aston Villa’s unbeaten European run came to a dramatic halt as Unai Emery’s side suffered a shock 2–1 defeat to Go Ahead Eagles in the UEFA Europa League group stage on Thursday night in Deventer.
Villa looked in control early on when Evann Guessand struck in the fourth minute, capitalising on defensive confusion to give the visitors an ideal start. However, the Premier League side failed to build on their advantage and were punished by a spirited Dutch side who refused to back down.
The hosts found their equaliser just before the interval through Mathis Suray, whose long-range effort deflected into the top corner, sending the home fans into raptures. Despite Villa’s second-half dominance in possession, they were undone again when Mats Deijl produced a composed finish in the 61st minute to put the Eagles ahead.
Villa were handed a golden chance to rescue a point late on after being awarded a penalty, but Emiliano Buendía fired his effort high over the bar, sealing a historic win for the Eredivisie side.
Manager Unai Emery expressed frustration at his team’s lack of composure in front of goal, admitting his side “paid the price for missed chances.” The defeat leaves Villa on six points in Group E, while Go Ahead Eagles celebrated their first-ever Europa League group-stage victory.
With crucial fixtures still to come, Aston Villa will need a swift response to maintain their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages — but Thursday’s result serves as a sharp reminder that no game in Europe can be taken for granted.
