Liverpool’s title defence has hit a major roadblock. Four consecutive defeats have dropped the Reds to fourth in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Arsenal. After spending almost £450 million in the summer, manager Arne Slot is under pressure to rediscover the winning formula that powered Liverpool to last season’s title.
Salah’s Struggles Continue
Mohamed Salah, who scored 29 goals last season, has failed to find his rhythm this term. The Egyptian has gone seven Premier League games without a goal from open play and looks short on confidence. Once known for his fearless dribbling and clinical finishing, Salah now seems hesitant in attack and reluctant to track back, leaving Slot with a difficult decision about whether to rest his long-time talisman.
Isak’s Dry Spell Raises Questions
Record signing Alexander Isak is yet to score in seven appearances, while fellow forward Hugo Ekitike has been restricted to brief cameos since his early-season success. Slot must decide whether to persist with Isak or find a way to use both strikers in tandem to revive Liverpool’s misfiring frontline.
Wirtz Searching for His Role
Summer signing Florian Wirtz, brought in from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million, has also struggled to settle. Deployed in a central role rather than his preferred position on the left, the German playmaker has yet to score or assist in the league. His creativity is evident when given minutes, but he remains on the fringes as Slot leans on his established midfield trio.
Full-Back Flaws Exposed
The departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold has left a glaring gap at right-back. Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley, and even Dominik Szoboszlai have all been tried with limited success, leaving that flank vulnerable. On the left, Milos Kerkez has failed to dislodge Andy Robertson convincingly, adding to Liverpool’s defensive uncertainty.
Defence Under Pressure
With both full-backs struggling, central defenders Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have been exposed. Liverpool have already conceded 11 league goals—eight more than at this stage last season—and have managed just two clean sheets. Costly errors and poor set-piece defending have compounded their problems, forcing Slot to urgently address the defensive imbalance.
As the defeats mount, Slot’s challenge is clear: rediscover Liverpool’s rhythm, restore confidence in attack, and shore up a defence that once looked unbreakable.
