Bhubaneswar: The men’s doubles semifinal at the Denmark Open 2025 is underway, and the Japanese pair of Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi have drawn first blood against India’s star duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, winning the opening game 23-21 in a tense battle at Odense on Saturday.
The match began with both pairs testing each other’s defense, trading points through fast-paced rallies and sharp net exchanges. Satwik and Chirag, the reigning Asian Games gold medallists, looked composed early on, but the Japanese duo held their nerve in crucial moments, saving a game point before clinching the opener 23-21.
The Indian pair, currently ranked among the world’s best, entered this contest after a gritty 21-15, 18-21, 21-16 quarterfinal win over Indonesia’s Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Rahmat Hidayat. Their form throughout the tournament has been strong, combining Chirag’s precision at the net with Satwik’s booming smashes from the backcourt.
However, Hoki and Kobayashi, the former world champions, have come well-prepared. They’ve kept the Indian pair on the move with clever placements and sharp counterattacks. Despite India’s 4-1 head-to-head advantage coming into this semifinal, the Japanese team has clearly come determined to flip the script.
As the second game gets underway, all eyes are on how Satwik and Chirag respond. The Indians, known for their resilience and powerful mid-court play, will aim to force a decider and keep their hopes alive for a spot in Sunday’s final of this BWF Super 750 event.
