Indian Fencing Shines in Lagos as Commonwealth Championships Bring Fresh Medal Success

Indian fencing is enjoying another encouraging international outing as the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships enter their decisive stages in Lagos, Nigeria. With India sending the largest contingent at the event, the country’s fencers have continued to challenge for podium places across épée, foil and sabre.

The championships, being held from August 9 to 14, have brought together athletes from across the Commonwealth. India has fielded 67 fencers, competing across Senior, U-23, Veteran and Para categories. The Lagos edition is particularly significant as it is the first time the Senior and Veteran Commonwealth Fencing Championships are being hosted in Africa.

Khushi Dabhade delivers a major breakthrough

One of the latest Indian highlights has come from Khushi Dabhade, who secured the silver medal in the women’s individual épée competition.

The Madhya Pradesh fencer, who has developed through the state’s fencing academy in Bhopal, produced a strong campaign on the Commonwealth stage. Her silver is an important result for Indian fencing and further underlines the growing depth in the women’s épée discipline.

Dabhade’s progress is also significant because her rise has been built through the domestic system. Her selection for international competitions earlier in the year had already indicated her growing stature, and the Commonwealth podium finish now provides another important milestone in her career.

India enters the championships with strength in numbers

India’s 67-member contingent is the biggest at the Lagos championships, reflecting the country’s increasing investment and participation in fencing. Athletes are competing in all three traditional weapons — épée, foil and sabre — with opportunities spread across several age and competition categories.

The tournament also features two notable additions. The U-23 individual events have been incorporated into the championships for the first time, while wheelchair fencing has been introduced as an official medal discipline after its earlier demonstration at the 2022 edition in London.

Why the Lagos championships matter

The competition is more than another medal opportunity for India. It provides international exposure to a broad group of Indian fencers ahead of the next major cycle of continental and global competitions.

The Commonwealth Fencing Championships include individual and team events across épée, foil and sabre. Unlike FIE ranking tournaments, the event has its own Commonwealth structure, making podium finishes particularly valuable for athletes looking to establish themselves within the Commonwealth circuit.

India’s presence is especially noteworthy against the backdrop of fencing’s gradual growth in the country. The rise of athletes such as Bhavani Devi has helped bring greater attention to the sport, while younger fencers are now beginning to create their own international milestones.

The bigger picture

The latest results point to something bigger than one medal. India’s decision to send the largest contingent to Lagos shows the increasing breadth of the country’s fencing programme, while Dabhade’s silver offers another reminder that the next generation is beginning to convert international opportunities into podium finishes.

With the championships continuing until August 14, India still has further chances to add to its medal collection. For a sport that has traditionally operated outside the mainstream spotlight, every such performance helps strengthen its profile and gives young Indian fencers another reason to believe that the international podium is within reach.
