A highly anticipated international friendly between Argentina and Puerto Rico, initially slated for October 13 at Chicago’s Soldier Field, has been relocated to Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, amid growing unrest over an immigration crackdown in Chicago.

According to the Associated Press, the decision came after President Donald Trump’s administration deployed National Guard troops to suppress protests surrounding mass deportations in the city. An official from the Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed the move, citing “the situation in Chicago” as the reason for the last-minute change.

The official, who requested anonymity, noted that safety concerns and logistical uncertainties made it impossible to proceed with the match as planned.

Messi Returns Home to Miami

The relocation brings the game to familiar ground for Lionel Messi, who plays his club football for Inter Miami. The friendly will now take place at Chase Stadium, Inter Miami’s home venue, where Messi will lead Argentina in front of a largely supportive crowd.

Messi, along with teammates Julian Alvarez and Rodrigo De Paul, is expected to feature in both friendlies — first against Venezuela on Friday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, followed by the rescheduled clash with Puerto Rico. Both matches serve as warm-ups for Argentina’s World Cup 2026 preparations, with the tournament set to be co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada next summer (June 11–July 19).

Immigration Crackdown in Chicago

The venue shift highlights the broader national tension surrounding immigration policy in the United States. Over 1,000 immigrants have reportedly been arrested in the Chicago area since the crackdown began last month.

The Trump administration has pledged to intensify deportations and expand the presence of the National Guard to maintain “law and order,” sparking widespread protests across major U.S. cities. The escalation of unrest in Chicago forced local authorities and event organizers to reconsider hosting large gatherings, including international sporting events.

Argentina’s World Cup Preparations Continue

Despite the political backdrop, Argentina’s focus remains firmly on football. As the defending World Cup champions, they continue to fine-tune their squad for next year’s title defense. Messi’s inclusion in both friendlies underscores his continued commitment to the national team, even as he balances club duties and the physical demands of a long season.

The AFA expressed hope that the Florida matches will proceed smoothly, allowing fans to enjoy the team’s final tune-ups on U.S. soil ahead of the World Cup.

In Summary:

Argentina’s friendly against Puerto Rico has been moved from Chicago to Florida amid political unrest linked to an immigration crackdown. While the shift underscores America’s deepening divisions, it also offers fans in Florida — and particularly Messi’s Inter Miami supporters — a chance to witness the World Cup champions up close.
