Shubman Gill has been named India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, for the three-match series against Australia beginning October 19. Shreyas Iyer will serve as vice-captain. Gill, 26, now leads India in both Tests and ODIs, while continuing as deputy in T20 internationals.
Rohit and Kohli Return
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are back in the squad after more than seven months away from international cricket. Their last outing came at the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. Both stalwarts have stepped away from T20Is and Tests, and are now expected to anchor India’s 50-over setup heading into the 2027 World Cup.
Selectors’ Explanation
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Rohit had been informed about the change in leadership. “We don’t play many ODIs and we wanted to give the next guy enough time,” Agarkar said. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the series, while Yashasvi Jaiswal makes a return to the squad.
