Zagreb, Croatia — Day 4 at the World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb saw thrilling battles in women’s freestyle categories 50kg, 57kg, 65kg, and 76kg, with rising stars emerging and historic moments marking wrestling history.
In the 76kg semifinals, Milaimy Marin of Cuba stormed through her match with a dominant 10-0 victory, while Ecuador’s Genesis Reasco matched her pace, cruising to an 11-0 win. Japan’s Nodoka Yamamoto eked out a 6-5 quarterfinal win over China’s Qiandegenchagan in a close tactical bout.
At 50kg, former Olympic medalist Helen Maroulis showcased her trademark arm-bar technique to pin Emine Cakmak of Turkey in the 57kg semifinal, while Japan’s Remina Yoshimoto powered through a tough 11-4 quarterfinal win at 50kg.
A historic milestone was witnessed as Aylah Mayali became the first Palestinian woman to compete at a World Championships, though facing a tough draw against 3-time world medalist Irina Ringaci, which ended in a 0-12 loss.
Other notable highlights of the day included a spectacular win by Myonggyong Won (North Korea) by 12-0 at 50kg quarterfinals, and fierce exchanges between European bronze medalist Solomiia Vynnyk and Olympic bronze Kexin Hong, with Hong coming from behind to win 17-6 in an electrifying 57kg bout.
Japan soared in the team standings, leading with 110 points, followed by North Korea and Russia, after their athletes accumulated vital wins paving the way for medal contention in upcoming bouts.
