New Delhi:
Paris Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat has been disqualified from the World Wrestling Championship in Belgrade after failing to make weight for his opening bout in the men’s 57kg category. Sehrawat, one of India’s brightest young wrestling stars, was reportedly 1.7 kilograms over the limit at the official weigh-in, leading to his immediate elimination from the tournament.
Illness Cited As Reason For Weight Mishap
According to the Indian coaching staff, the 21-year-old wrestler fell ill the night before the weigh-in, suffering from high fever, which hampered his weight-cutting process. Despite efforts to manage his weight, Sehrawat was unable to meet the 57kg requirement, forcing him to forfeit his match without stepping on the mat.
Federation To Probe Incident
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has sought a detailed report from both Sehrawat and his coach regarding the incident. Officials have indicated that disciplinary measures, including a possible suspension, may be considered. Weight-related disqualifications are taken seriously by the governing body, given the professionalism expected at international competitions.
A Setback After Olympic Glory
Sehrawat’s unexpected exit comes just weeks after his historic bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he was widely celebrated as one of India’s future wrestling greats. The setback is a significant blow to India’s medal prospects at the World Championship, and fans are hoping for a swift recovery for the young athlete.
