Pretoria: Newly appointed Pretoria Capitals head coach Sourav Ganguly has made an immediate impact, orchestrating one of the most dramatic moves in SA20 history. In a fierce bidding war that electrified the auction room, the Capitals secured 22-year-old batting prodigy Dewald Brevis for a record-breaking R16.5 million, outbidding the Joburg Super Kings in the process.
The blockbuster signing shattered the league’s previous auction record, previously held by Aiden Markram, and underlined the Capitals’ determination to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season. Brevis’ price tag, equivalent to over ₹8.3 crore, makes him the highest-paid player in SA20 history.
Nicknamed “Baby AB” for his fearless batting style reminiscent of AB de Villiers, Brevis has been one of cricket’s hottest prospects. His recent exploits for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL further cemented his reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in world cricket.
Ganguly, taking charge of Pretoria just weeks ago, described Brevis as a “game-changer” and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the Capitals’ batting lineup. “We’re building a team that can dominate this tournament. Dewald’s energy, talent, and hunger are exactly what we need,” Ganguly said after the auction.
The record-breaking deal is not just a statement of faith in Brevis’ talent but also a declaration of intent from Pretoria, signaling a bold new era for the franchise. With the SA20 season set to begin on December 26, 2025, all eyes will be on Brevis and Ganguly to see if this ambitious gamble pays off.
