NEW YORK, USA — Naomi Osaka delivered a statement win at the US Open on Monday, overpowering home favorite Coco Gauff to reach her first Grand Slam doubles quarterfinal in nearly a decade. In a highly-anticipated fourth-round showdown, the Japanese star defeated the third-seeded Gauff 6-3, 6-2 on the Labor Day holiday. Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek continued her relentless march, rolling into the quarterfinals with a dominant straight-sets victory.
Osaka’s Resurgence and an Emotional Victory
In a lopsided affair on a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium court, Osaka broke Gauff in the very first game and was untouchable on serve throughout the match. The American struggled, racking up 33 unforced errors, as the 27-year-old two-time US Open champion delivered a ruthless display of power and precision. This win marks Osaka’s deepest run at a major since her 2021 Australian Open title and is a key milestone in her return to the sport after giving birth to her daughter in 2023.
“I was in the stands two months after I gave birth watching Coco and I just really wanted an opportunity to come out here and play,” Osaka said after the match.
The win sets up a quarterfinal clash for Osaka against Czech 11th seed Karolina Muchova, who advanced after a three-set battle against Marta Kostyuk.
Swiatek Continues Grand Slam Streak
Second seed Iga Swiatek had a far less dramatic day, brushing aside Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-1 in just over an hour. The victory extends her Grand Slam winning streak to 11 matches as she pursues her second US Open title. Swiatek has now reached the last eight or better at all four majors in a single season for the first time in her career.
Men’s Side Sees Rising Stars Advance
On the men’s side, a trio of players secured their quarterfinal berths with impressive wins.
- Eighth seed Alex de Minaur of Australia sealed a quick passage, defeating Swiss qualifier Leandro Riedi 6-3, 6-2, 6-1. The win puts De Minaur into his sixth Grand Slam quarterfinal, though he has yet to advance past that stage.
- The Australian will face Felix Auger-Aliassime, who reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal in three years by defeating Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
- Italian tenth seed Lorenzo Musetti also progressed, demolishing Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 to reach his first US Open quarterfinal.
