Goa : After a 23-year hiatus, the prestigious FIDE Chess World Cup is returning to India, and this time, the stunning coastal state of Goa will be the grand stage. From October 30 to November 27, 2025, 206 top chess players from across the globe will gather to compete in an intense knockout tournament with a hefty prize fund of $2 million.
The World Cup is not just a battle for prize money but a gateway to the 2026 Candidates Tournament, with the top three finishers earning their spots to challenge for the World Championship. This dramatic event features every round as a win-or-go-home fight, with classical games followed by rapid and blitz tiebreaks if necessary.
Goa, known for its vibrant culture and warm hospitality, offers a perfect backdrop, blending world-class chess with a festive atmosphere. Indian chess fans have much to cheer about, as 20 homegrown players, including stars like D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, and former World Champion Vishy Anand, will be part of the fray.
The event also recalls a lighthearted memory from 2002 when Iranian players, from a country where dancing is banned, joyfully danced in Goa. Reflecting on this, an organizer noted, “In Iran no dancing. In Goa, Iranians danced,” symbolizing the freedom and joyous spirit the tournament brings along with fierce competition.
With Goa’s picturesque landscapes and chess history intertwining once again, the 2025 FIDE World Cup promises to be a thrilling chapter in the world of chess. “The countdown has officially begun,” said a FIDE representative. “We look forward to witnessing incredible games and unforgettable moments in Goa.”
This return of the World Cup to India marks not just a sporting event but a celebration of chess culture on a global scale. Fans worldwide eagerly await the showdown on Goa’s shores.
