Mohammed Shami on Retirement: “Whose Life Will Be Better If I Retire?” — One Dream Left to Win the ODI World Cup

Bhubaneswar : Mohammed Shami, one of India’s premier fast bowlers, has passionately addressed the swirling retirement rumors in a recent candid interview. The 34-year-old speedster, who has faced some recent selection setbacks including being dropped from the Asia Cup 2025 squad and overlooked for the England tour, made it clear that he has no intention of retiring anytime soon. Shami emphasized, “If someone has a problem, tell me. Whose life will become better if I take retirement? The day I get bored, I will leave.” He added that even if he is not picked for international matches, he will continue playing domestic cricket or wherever he can keep competing. According to Shami, retirement decisions come only when a player loses passion, and for him, that time is “not now” .

Despite injuries and the natural challenges of being a fast bowler in his mid-30s, Shami remains focused and motivated. He revealed that after undergoing surgery and managing injuries, he has worked hard to regain fitness, shed weight, and improve his bowling rhythm. His goal is to be able to bowl long spells again and contribute meaningfully to whichever team calls him. His drive and love for the game keep him going, as he vowed to stay on as long as his fire burns bright.

What truly fuels Shami’s continued commitment is the dream of winning the ODI World Cup for India. Reflecting on India’s near success in the 2023 edition, where he was the leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets, Shami shared the emotional rollercoaster of that journey: “We were very close; we had a gut feeling but also some fear in the knockout stages. The enthusiasm and belief of the fans motivated us greatly.” His singular dream remains to be part of the 2027 Cricket World Cup-winning team and bring the trophy home for the country.

Key Takeaways:

Shami will retire only when he feels bored and loses motivation.

Even if dropped from the national side, he will continue playing competitive cricket domestically.

He has worked hard to recover from injuries and is focused on fitness.

His biggest dream: winning the ODI World Cup with India, a goal he is determined to achieve in 2027.

Mohammed Shami’s fiery response to retirement rumors alongside his unwavering dream makes it clear — he is far from hanging up his boots and is ready to fight harder than ever for Indian cricket glory .
