Bhubaneswar : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has responded swiftly after Rishabh Pant suffered a serious foot injury on Day 1 of the fourth Test between India and England at Old Trafford, Manchester. Pant, who had to retire hurt after being struck by a Chris Woakes delivery, was later seen in a moon boot, with medical assessments confirming a fractured toe.
Reflecting these recent incidents, the BCCI has now amended its playing conditions to allow for emergency substitutions. “If a player sustains a serious injury during the course of the relevant match, a Serious Injury Replacement may be permitted,” the BCCI’s updated Playing Conditions state. This measure is intended to provide teams with a like-for-like replacement when a player suffers a verified serious injury, such as a fracture, deep cut, or dislocation, during the match.
Following Pant’s injury, reserve keeper Dhruv Jurel was allowed to don the gloves for India. The new protocol clarifies that requests for such replacements require umpire and match referee approval on the ground, who may also consult the team doctor before allowing the substitute. This change comes as a relief for sides grappling with multiple injuries in a tightly-fought series, aiming to maintain a level playing field and ensure fairness in high-stakes matches.
The rule will be implemented in upcoming multi-day domestic tournaments and reflects the growing need for player welfare in modern cricket, after high-profile incidents left teams at a disadvantage. With the series finale approaching, the amendment is widely regarded as a progressive step that safeguards both teams and players in the event of sudden, game-altering injuries.
