Roodepoort, South Africa – Jacques Van der Merwe has secured his first professional win, triumphing by two strokes over England’s Joe Sullivan at the fifth Betway Big Easy Tour tournament held at CMR Golf Club on Thursday. The Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club player concluded the event with a total score of 15-under-par.
Gritty Final Round Performance
Van der Merwe entered the final round with a three-stroke lead, established by an impressive seven-under 63 in round two that brought his tournament total to 12-under. Despite the challenging and very cold conditions on Thursday, which made the course particularly tough, Van der Merwe managed a final round of three-under 67. His round included seven birdies but also two double-bogeys, highlighting the demanding nature of the day.
While his victory appeared comfortable on the scorecard, Van der Merwe admitted to experiencing significant nerves, particularly over his final birdie putt on the 18th hole.
Impact on Order of Merit
The victory marks a significant milestone for Van der Merwe. With this win, he moves up to fifth place on the Betway Big Easy Tour Order of Merit. The top 12 players on these rankings at the end of the season will earn their coveted Sunshine Tour cards, providing a pathway to a higher level of professional golf.
England’s Joe Sullivan, who also put in an impressive effort in the difficult conditions, finished two strokes behind Van der Merwe, narrowly missing out on his second win of the season.
The Betway Big Easy Tour serves as the Sunshine Tour’s feeder circuit and enjoys the strong backing of golf legend Ernie Els, among other key patrons, fostering the development of emerging golf talent.
