India’s 2-2 draw in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy sparked an unusual online debate, with some social media users suggesting that India performed better in Tests without pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. But legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar has now come out in strong support of the 31-year-old, terming such talk baseless and coincidental.
‘Unbelievable performer’: Sachin backs Bumrah
In a video message shared on Reddit, Tendulkar addressed the ongoing online narrative. He praised Bumrah’s impact in the series and labelled him a world-class bowler.
“Of the three Tests Bumrah played, he took five-wicket hauls in two. He started off really well and was phenomenal at Lord’s as well. I know people are discussing how India won the matches he didn’t play—but for me, that’s just a coincidence,” Tendulkar said.
“What he’s done for India is unbelievable. He has been a consistent performer and I would place him right at the top alongside the very best.”
Workload management behind Bumrah’s absence
Bumrah featured in the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Tests of the five-match series, having been rested as part of workload management protocols. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had made it clear that Bumrah wouldn’t play all five matches, especially with the Champions Trophy ahead.
He claimed five wickets each in Leeds and at Lord’s, but India lost both matches. He went wicketless in the second innings of the series opener, where England chased down a mammoth 373-run target.
Siraj steps up in Bumrah’s absence
While Bumrah’s absence in the final Test raised eyebrows, Mohammed Siraj rose to the occasion at The Oval. The Hyderabad pacer claimed 9 wickets in the match, including a stunning five-wicket haul in the second innings, to help India clinch a thrilling 6-run victory and level the series.
Siraj finished the series with 23 wickets, the most by any bowler, and earned the Player of the Match award in the decider.
‘I love his attitude,’ says Tendulkar on Siraj
Tendulkar also lauded Siraj for his effort and commitment, praising the pacer’s hunger and intensity.
“Unbelievable. Superb approach. I love his attitude,” Tendulkar said. “Whether he takes five wickets or none, his energy never dips. That’s what makes him so special.”
Siraj bowled 185.3 overs across five Tests, more than any other fast bowler in the series.
Series of milestones for Indian cricket
The five-match series was also a major milestone for Shubman Gill, who captained India in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The young skipper led from the front, scoring 754 runs, and was named Player of the Series.
The England tour marked the inaugural edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, replacing the previous Pataudi and Anthony de Mello trophies.
While Siraj won hearts with his fire, Tendulkar’s firm backing of Bumrah sent a strong message: class is permanent, and one or two matches don’t define a player’s legacy.
