Maharashtra : Vaishnavi Patil, a young wrestler from Kalyan, Maharashtra, has achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for the 2025 World Wrestling Championships in the 65kg category. Her journey is inspiring, marked by perseverance through multiple setbacks in trials for major events like the Asian Games and previous World Championships.
Originally trained in traditional mud wrestling common in Maharashtra, Vaishnavi switched to professional mat wrestling only in 2020 under coach Jasbeer’s guidance in Hisar. Despite having no prior international junior-level experience, she demonstrated relentless dedication and skill improvement to overcome the odds. Her breakthrough came when she defeated Muskan of Haryana 7-2 in the final trial, securing her maiden spot on the world stage.
Supported by her family, including her dhaba-owning father, Vaishnavi’s story is one of ambition and hard work in pursuit of Olympic dreams. She draws inspiration from Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik and looks forward to making her mark at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, hoping to build a strong international career ahead.
This ascent from local mud wrestling pits to global wrestling mats underscores not only Vaishnavi’s individual talent but also the growing prominence of Indian women wrestlers on the international circuit. Her journey embodies resilience and the transformative power of sports.
