London : India secured a stunning final test victory by six runs over England at The Oval on final day, wrapping up the last four wickets in less than an hour to bowl England out for 367.
India seemed to be in a difficult position, but remarkable displays from Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj in the final session of Day 4 turned the tide. The day started with England requiring only 35 runs, and two boundaries came right away from Prasidh Krishna’s initial two deliveries. However, Mohammed Siraj changed the momentum. First, he bowled Jamie Smith, who edged the ball behind to Dhruv Jurel with a stunning delivery that moved late. One ball later, Gus Atkinson nearly edged it to KL Rahul. Siraj continued to make an impact. In his following over, he got Jamie Overton LBW with a delivery that barely clipped the leg stump, a decision upheld on umpire’s call. Prasidh came back and nearly dismissed Josh Tongue LBW, but a review saved him. Yet, a few overs later, he claimed Tongue’s wicket with an outstanding delivery. England had only one wicket remaining, requiring 11 runs. Chris Woakes entered the field and amazed everyone by batting left-handed and using only one arm after injuring his right shoulder while diving on Day 1. In an effort to shield Woakes, Atkinson clobbered Siraj for a six, but he couldn’t last much longer. Siraj bowled him out cleanly, igniting celebrations among his teammates.
Throughout the final day, India pacer Mohammed Siraj claimed three wickets, culminating in a five-wicket haul, which led to a nail-biting triumph against England in the fifth Test at The Oval. England needed 35 runs to clinch the match on the last day, but brilliant performances from Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, who took four wickets, ensured India leveled the series at 2-2 and held on to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
“We just kept believing,” he said. “This team never backs down.” .Shubman Gill’s India knew they had to win the Test to even the series and retain the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
