Lagos, Nigeria – Indian paddler Sreeja Akula continued her sensational run at the WTT Contender Lagos on Friday, following up her major upset over top seed Hina Hayata with two dominant victories to secure a coveted spot in the women’s singles semifinals. This impressive performance highlights a strong showing from the Indian contingent, even as some fell short in other categories.
Akula Dominates Road to Semifinals
The 26-year-old Akula started her Friday campaign with a hard-fought win in the pre-quarterfinals, defeating Italy’s Debora Vivarelli 9-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-1. This victory propelled her into the quarterfinals, where she delivered another commanding performance.
- Quarterfinal Triumph: Akula comprehensively overcame Portugal’s Jieni Shao with a straight-games victory, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7, to book her place in the penultimate round of the tournament.
- Semifinal Opponent: Sreeja Akula is now set to face either Prithika Pavade of France or Portugal’s Fu Yu in the semifinals, eyeing a spot in the final.
Mixed Results for Other Indian Paddlers
While Akula shined in singles, India also saw mixed fortunes in the doubles events.
- Men’s Doubles Finalists: The pair of G. Sathiyan and Akash Pal showcased strong teamwork to reach the finals of the men’s doubles event. They are now poised to compete for the title against the French duo of Leo de Nodrest and Jules Rolland.
- Mixed Doubles Runner-Up: In the mixed doubles category, the Indian pair of Akash Pal and Poymantee Baisya concluded their campaign as runner-up, falling to the French pair of Jules Rolland and Prithika Pavade with a 1-3 loss in the final.
- Singles Exits: Both Akash Pal and G. Sathiyan, despite their doubles success, faced defeats in their respective men’s singles matches against the Frenchmen they will meet in the doubles final. Pal was defeated by Leo de Nodrest 12-10, 13-11, 11-6, 11-8, while Sathiyan lost to Jules Rolland 11-6, 11-8, 11-7.
