New Delhi : The Sports Ministry of India has officially approved the launch of the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL), a first-of-its-kind city-based franchise golf league, set to debut in January 2026. Organized by the Indian Golf Union (IGU) in partnership with Bharat Golf Private Limited, the IGPL will feature teams made up of both amateurs and professionals, competing in a franchise-based, team format across multiple Indian cities.
The league’s main objectives are to popularize golf in India, provide international-standard training and coaching to over one million school and college students in the next three years, and elevate India’s presence on the global golf stage. Icon players—likely prominent Indian professionals—will lead the six expected franchises, with team assignments determined by a strategic, non-monetary auction process for the first three years.
This government-backed initiative represents a transformative shift for Indian golf, aiming to dismantle barriers of exclusivity, increase grassroots participation, and offer larger visibility for the sport nationwide.
