Fort Lauderdale, USA – Lionel Messi continued his unprecedented run in Major League Soccer on Saturday, scoring both goals in Inter Miami’s 2-1 victory over Nashville SC. This exceptional performance extended his MLS record for consecutive multi-goal games to five, a streak he initiated last week by becoming the first player in league history to achieve four straight multi-goal matches.
Two Goals, Two Halves for the Argentine Maestro
Messi’s brilliance was on full display with a goal in each half. He opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick, a low left-footed shot that expertly navigated the Nashville wall and beat goalkeeper Joe Willis to find the bottom corner. In the 62nd minute, he capitalized on a poor pass from Willis, intercepting the ball with ease, dribbling around the keeper, and slotting it into the net. This crucial win propelled Inter Miami to fifth position in the Supporters’ Shield leaderboard.
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano lauded Messi’s efforts after the match, while also addressing concerns about the star’s workload. “Obviously, we’re monitoring the situation daily and having ongoing conversations with him,” Mascherano stated.
This marks the first time Messi has scored in five consecutive multi-goal league games since his remarkable run of six with Barcelona in La Liga back in 2012.
Contract Talks and Commissioner’s Praise
With Messi’s contract with Inter Miami set to expire at the end of the calendar year, reports have surfaced about his potential interest in signing an extension. MLS Commissioner Don Garber recently commented on Messi’s impact on the league to USA Today, remarking, “Messi has been such an incredible part of the MLS story the last couple of years, and playing so well. It’s just been a gift to have the best player in the world in Major League Soccer.”
