A Leader on and off the Field Ends an 11-Year NFL Journey

Veteran linebacker C.J. Mosley has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a distinguished 11-year NFL career. The announcement came on June 19—his 33rd birthday—marking both a personal and professional milestone.

Mosley shared his decision through a personal video, reflecting on the highs and challenges of his career. Known for his calm demeanor and commanding presence on the field, Mosley leaves behind a legacy built on leadership, consistency, and elite-level play.

A Standout from Day One

Drafted 17th overall by the Baltimore Ravens in 2014, Mosley wasted no time making an impact. He earned Pro Bowl honors in his rookie season and quickly established himself as the backbone of the Ravens’ defense. Over five seasons in Baltimore, Mosley tallied more than 500 tackles and became one of the league’s most respected linebackers.

His performance drew comparisons to Ravens legend Ray Lewis—not just for his tackling ability, but for his intelligence and leadership in the middle of the defense.

The Jets Era: A New Challenge

In 2019, Mosley signed a massive five-year, $85 million deal with the New York Jets, making him one of the highest-paid linebackers in NFL history. Though injuries and a pandemic-related opt-out limited his early time in New York, Mosley returned in 2021 to lead a young and rebuilding Jets defense.

He was named team captain and led the Jets in tackles for multiple seasons, culminating in a Pro Bowl return in 2022. Teammates often credited him with setting the tone in both practice and games—both vocally and by example.

The Final Chapter

Mosley’s final season in 2024 was cut short by injuries, including a toe issue and a herniated disk in his neck. The Jets released him in March 2025, signaling the end of his time in New York. With no new team offers materializing and health a growing concern, Mosley made the decision to step away.

“I always told myself I would know when it’s time,” he said in his retirement message. “Today, I’m at peace with that decision.”

A Legacy of Excellence

Mosley finishes his career with over 1,000 tackles, 12 sacks, 12 interceptions, and five Pro Bowl selections. But numbers only tell part of the story. His real value came as a leader—a stabilizing force in every locker room he entered.

For the Jets and Ravens alike, Mosley was more than a linebacker. He was a teacher, a motivator, and a constant professional who gave everything he had on every down.

What’s Next?

Mosley hasn’t revealed his future plans, but given his knowledge of the game and natural leadership skills, coaching or mentoring roles could be in his future. Whether on the sidelines or in a broadcast booth, his insights and presence are likely to remain part of the football world.

As one of the NFL’s most dependable defensive stars bows out, C.J. Mosley leaves behind not just a stat sheet of accomplishments—but a standard for how to lead, fight through adversity, and walk away with dignity.
