India’s young compound archers made headlines on Tuesday by setting two under-21 world records during the qualification round of the Asia Cup Leg-2 in Singapore.
The women’s team — Shanmukhi Naga Sai, Tejal Salve, and Tanishka Nilkumar — delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 2101 points to break the previous U-21 team record of 2076, which was also held by India since 2022.
In another record-breaking feat, Shanmukhi teamed up with Kushal Dalal for the mixed team event. With individual scores of 706 (Shanmukhi) and 714 (Kushal), they totaled 1420 points, edging past the previous mark of 1419 set by the USA last year.
India also dominated the individual events, booking spots in both the men’s and women’s finals.
Kushal, the top seed in the men’s compound category, secured his place in the final after a convincing 147-143 win over Bangladesh’s Himu Bachhar in the semifinals, ensuring at least a silver medal. Meanwhile, India’s Sachin Chechi, seeded 10th, lost his semifinal to Australia’s Joshua Machon and will face Bachhar in the bronze medal match.
In the women’s individual compound event, India is guaranteed both gold and silver, as top seed Shanmukhi and second seed Tejal Salve will face off in an all-Indian final. Shanmukhi defeated Indonesia’s Yurike Nina Bonita Pereira 145-139, while Tejal got past Malaysia’s Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh with a score of 147-142 in the semifinals.
