Rory McIlroy has officially become the first player to qualify for Team Europe at the 2025 Ryder Cup, the team announced on Monday. The reigning Masters champion will be making his eighth consecutive appearance in the prestigious biennial event.
McIlroy secured his spot via the European Points List — a ranking system based on performances in DP World Tour and co-sanctioned tournaments. The Northern Irishman has been in red-hot form, picking up four wins since last August, including the Dubai DP World Tour Championship, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Players Championship, and of course, his long-awaited Masters triumph in April that completed his career Grand Slam.
A top-20 finish at the U.S. Open over the weekend was enough to mathematically lock in his place on the team.
This year’s Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black in New York from September 26–28. European captain Luke Donald will round out his 12-man squad later in the year, with six players qualifying automatically and six others chosen as captain’s picks.
McIlroy expressed his pride at securing another Ryder Cup spot.
“It’s always a huge honour to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup, so it means a great deal to have qualified for my eighth in a row and to be part of Luke’s team again at Bethpage,” he said.
“Winning a Ryder Cup on U.S. soil is one of the toughest challenges in golf. We know it’s going to be difficult in New York, but the whole team is excited for the challenge and the chance to do something really special.”
Since making his debut in 2010, McIlroy has been a cornerstone of the European side, playing in seven editions of the Ryder Cup and helping deliver five victories.
