Five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen claimed his seventh Norway Chess title after American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana defeated India’s rising star D Gukesh in the final round, earning a full three points and altering the tournament’s outcome.
It was a tough day for Gukesh. Despite being on the back foot against the 2018 Norway Chess champion Caruana, he fought hard to stage a comeback. But with time running out, he faltered—making a decisive mistake that sealed his fate in a matter of seconds. With just two seconds left on his clock, Gukesh extended a handshake in resignation before burying his face in his hands in frustration.
Meanwhile, Carlsen wrapped up the event with 16 points after holding fellow Indian player Arjun Erigaisi to a draw, despite being in a worse position. Caruana finished just half a point behind at 15.5, while Gukesh took third place with 14.5—matching his result from his previous appearance at the tournament. Erigaisi ended in fifth with 12.5 points.
