Odisha, Bhubaneshwar- The World Athletics Diamond League is back for its 16th season in 2025, promising a captivating series of top-tier track and field meets across the globe. As the premier annual circuit outside of the Olympics and World Championships, the Diamond League will serve as the perfect proving ground for the world’s best athletes, culminating in a dramatic final. With the season’s most crucial meets scheduled for this month, all eyes are on the final push for a spot in Zurich.

August 2025: The Final Sprint to the Finish Line

The month of August marks the final, exhilarating leg of the “Road to the Final,” as athletes earn their last crucial points to qualify for the championship. The intensity builds with three key meets before the grand finale in Zurich.

  • August 16: The series heads to Chorzów, Poland, for the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, where athletes will fight for valuable points in a last-ditch effort to climb the standings.
  • August 20: The action moves to Lausanne, Switzerland, for the Athletissima Lausanne. Known for its fast track and electrifying atmosphere, this meet is a favorite among athletes and fans alike.
  • August 22: The penultimate meet, the Memorial van Damme, takes place in Brussels, Belgium. This historic event often sees records broken and final qualification spots secured in a pressure-cooker environment.
  • August 27-28: The season culminates in the highly anticipated two-day final, Weltklasse Zürich, in Switzerland, where the Diamond League champions will be crowned.

Format, Rules, and The New “Diamond+” Disciplines

The 2025 season will maintain the core “Road to the Final” format, where athletes compete for points at the series meets to qualify for the final. The top qualifiers in each of the 32 Diamond League disciplines (from sprints to throws) will earn their spot in the ultimate showdown in Zurich.

A key new addition for 2025 is the introduction of “Diamond+ Disciplines.” At each meeting, four events (two male and two female) will be designated as “Diamond+,” featuring increased prize money. First-place winners in these events will see their prize double from $10,000 to $20,000 at regular meets, and to a massive $50,000 at the Zurich Final.

Athletes to Watch and Key Storylines

With the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo scheduled for September, the Diamond League season provides a crucial platform for athletes to get into peak form and build momentum.

  • Sprint Showdowns: The men’s 100m will be a must-watch event, with recent clashes between Jamaica’s Oblique Seville and American Olympic champion Noah Lyles setting the stage for more intense battles.
  • Mid-Distance Dominance: Keep an eye on Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi in the 800m, who has shown remarkable consistency and is a strong contender for the Diamond Trophy.
  • Field Event Stars: In the men’s javelin, reigning World Champion Neeraj Chopra has already secured his spot in the final, while American discus star Valarie Allman is in a “golden age” of her career and will be tough to beat.
  • Returning Champions: The season also features several Olympic and World Champions returning to the circuit, including Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in what could be her final season.

With a record $9.24 million in total prize money at stake and a new format adding to the drama, the 2025 Diamond League is set to be a season full of thrilling performances and record-breaking moments.
