Mercedes Bins Faulty Upgrade, Eyes Return to Form After F1 Summer Break

Brackley, UK – Former Formula One champions Mercedes are optimistic about challenging for race wins once again when the season resumes after the August break. This renewed hope comes after the team decided to scrap a problematic rear suspension upgrade that, despite initial intentions, had made their car significantly slower.

The Ill-Fated Upgrade and Its Impact

The upgrade, introduced at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola in May, initially seemed promising, especially after George Russell had secured top-three finishes in four of the first six races of the season. However, its implementation quickly led to a dip in performance.

  • Imola Setback: Russell finished only seventh in the Italian race, a clear indicator of the upgrade’s negative impact.
  • Temporary Removal and Misleading Win: Mercedes opted to drop the upgrade for the subsequent two rounds. It was then reintroduced for the Canadian Grand Prix, a race Russell surprisingly won. This victory, however, proved misleading, as Russell struggled in the following four races.
  • Return to Form in Hungary: The team’s decision to revert to the old suspension package for the Hungarian Grand Prix last weekend yielded immediate positive results, with Russell finishing third. Rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli also re-entered the points, securing 10th place after three races without scoring.

Lessons Learned and Future Aspirations

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff bluntly stated that the upgrade would “be ending up in a bin somewhere,” signifying the definitive end of its development path. Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin further explained in a Hungarian GP debrief on Wednesday that the car is now easier to work with, and both drivers feel more confident attacking corners with the older specification.

The team believes the extensive learning from this failed upgrade will be beneficial. Shovlin highlighted that this understanding would help George Russell in his ongoing battle with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for third place in the drivers’ championship. Furthermore, Mercedes is firmly focused on securing second place in the constructors’ championship, aiming for a strong second half of the season after the upcoming summer break.
