Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload: BCCI Prioritizes Longevity for India’s Star Pacer

Mumbai, India – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian team management are grappling with the ongoing challenge of managing star pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness and workload. With a clear focus on prolonging his career, particularly for major tournaments, the board is reportedly considering further limiting his game time.

Unanimous Decision to Protect Bumrah

Despite India’s challenging five-match Test series against England, Bumrah featured in only three matches, a decision made in advance to manage his workload. According to reports from The Indian Express and other sources, the Indian team management is “unanimous” in its decision to provide Bumrah with adequate rest, prioritizing his longevity at the highest level.

The primary aim is to ensure Bumrah’s availability and peak performance for ICC tournaments, such as the T20 World Cup on home soil in February and March 2026, and other crucial bilateral series.

Injury History and Proactive Management

Bumrah underwent back surgery earlier this year, which led to a significant period on the sidelines after playing all five Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25. He also missed a portion of the IPL 2025 season. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir had previously stated that Bumrah would be restricted to no more than three Tests in the England series, underscoring this proactive management approach.

While Bumrah has expressed his willingness to contribute in all three formats of the game, the BCCI’s medical team has advised caution due to a high risk of re-injury. A BCCI source was quoted as saying, “The medical staff is also involved, and when a player like Bumrah – who can win games on his own – is available, everything is being done to protect him.”

Encouraging Signs in Bumrah’s Absence

The team management’s strategy has been bolstered by India’s performance in the Tests where Bumrah was rested. India notably secured victories in both Tests in England in which he did not play, demonstrating the depth of their pace attack. In Bumrah’s absence, Mohammed Siraj impressively claimed 23 wickets across five Tests, while young pacers Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna also made significant contributions with 13 and 14 wickets respectively in their three matches.

BCCI sources clarify that this is not a case of Bumrah “picking and choosing” series, but rather a deliberate effort by the management to prioritize his long-term fitness and ensure his availability for the most critical assignments.
