San Antonio Spurs Lock Up De’Aaron Fox with Four-Year, $229 Million Extension

San Antonio, TX – The San Antonio Spurs have solidified a cornerstone of their future, agreeing to terms on a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension with All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox, multiple reports confirmed on Monday. The deal secures the 27-year-old through the 2029-30 campaign, making him a pivotal part of the Spurs’ ambitious plans alongside burgeoning French phenom Victor Wembanyama.

A Key Piece in San Antonio’s Rebuild

Fox, who was acquired by the Spurs in a major trade with the Sacramento Kings last February, was set to become a free agent next summer. However, San Antonio swiftly moved to ensure his long-term commitment. This extension, which officially begins in the 2026-27 season, underscores the franchise’s belief in Fox as a primary ball-handler and leader for their young core.

In his limited 17 appearances for the Spurs last season before undergoing season-ending surgery on his left pinkie finger in March, Fox averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. While his scoring dipped slightly after the trade, his playmaking remained crucial. Over his seven-plus seasons in the NBA, primarily with Sacramento, Fox boasts career averages of 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per contest, establishing himself as one of the league’s most dynamic guards. He was an NBA All-Star in 2023 and led the league in steals in 2024.

Forming a Formidable Core with Wembanyama and Young Talent

The extension firmly places Fox as a central figure in the Spurs’ vision, complementing the extraordinary talents of Victor Wembanyama. The 21-year-old, 7-foot-3 All-Star, who was the NBA Rookie of the Year two seasons ago, continued his dominant trajectory last season, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and a league-high 3.8 blocked shots per game in 46 appearances before his own season was unfortunately cut short due to a blood clot in his shoulder. The pairing of Fox’s elite guard play and Wembanyama’s generational two-way abilities promises a formidable pick-and-roll duo for years to come.

Beyond these two stars, the Spurs have continued to stockpile young talent, including Stephon Castle, last season’s NBA Rookie of the Year at guard, and Dylan Harper, selected with the second pick in June’s NBA Draft. The combination of established All-Star talent and promising rookies positions San Antonio to potentially become a strong contender in the competitive Western Conference in the coming seasons.
