Chief Justice Of India Visits Chess Champion Divya Deshmukh, Recalls Family Bond

Nagpur : Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Friday paid a special visit to the residence of India’s rising chess star, Divya Deshmukh, in Shankar Nagar, Nagpur, to personally congratulate her on her recent triumph at the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup. Deshmukh, 19, became the first Indian woman to win the prestigious international title, marking a historic achievement in Indian sports.

A National Milestone In Chess

During the visit, Chief Justice Chandrachud lauded Deshmukh’s achievement as a “defining moment” in the nation’s sporting history. “This is not just a personal victory, but a national milestone,” he said. “Divya’s success reflects the growing strength of Indian women in global arenas traditionally dominated by others. Her discipline, intellect, and perseverance are exemplary.”

Deshmukh’s win has placed India on the global chess map once again, bringing pride to the country and inspiring a new generation of aspiring players.

A Visit Rooted In Personal History

The Chief Justice’s visit was not only official but deeply personal. Recalling long-standing family ties, he shared that his late father, R.S. Gavai—former Governor of Kerala and Bihar—was a close friend of Divya’s grandfather, Dr. K.G. Deshmukh, a renowned educationist and former MPSC chairman. Gavai noted that his father regarded Divya’s grandmother as his sister, making the visit a touching reunion across generations.

As a gesture of appreciation, the CJI presented Divya with a commemorative chessboard and bouquet.

Divya Deshmukh: Honoured And Inspired

Expressing her gratitude, Divya said, “It was a great honour to have the Chief Justice visit our home. Learning about the family connection made this moment even more special. I am motivated to work even harder and continue making my country proud.”

Divya’s parents, both doctors, welcomed the Chief Justice and shared the journey of her chess career that began at the age of five and has now culminated in global recognition.

Celebrating A Symbol Of Aspiration

The CJI emphasized that Divya’s achievement is not only a triumph for Maharashtra but a symbol of the limitless potential of young Indians. Her victory underscores the importance of nurturing talent in sports, especially among young women.

“Her success story should reach every corner of the country,” the Chief Justice said. “It shows what’s possible when family support, hard work, and passion come together.”

About Divya Deshmukh:
Born and raised in Nagpur, Divya Deshmukh is an International Master and Woman Grandmaster. She was part of the Indian women’s team that won bronze at the 2022 Chess Olympiad and has consistently ranked among the top junior female players in the world.
