Chahal Breaks Silence on Divorce, Mental Struggles and Public Scrutiny

PC - NDTV

India’s seasoned leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has spoken candidly about his emotional turmoil following his divorce from choreographer and influencer Dhanashree Verma. In a deeply personal conversation on the Raj Shamani Podcast, the 34-year-old cricketer shared the mental health challenges he endured in the aftermath of the separation, including battling depression and suicidal thoughts.

Facing harsh judgment

Chahal said he was unfairly targeted by rumours that branded him as unfaithful, a claim he strongly denied. “People called me a cheater, but I’ve never betrayed anyone in my life. Loyalty means everything to me,” Chahal said, emphasizing that those close to him were aware of his values and integrity.

He recalled that the breakup wasn’t abrupt but rather the result of prolonged strain in the relationship. Despite the smiling posts on social media, the couple had been drifting apart for a while. “We decided not to reveal anything until we were sure. But there was a distance — both of us were constantly busy,” he explained.

Mental health took a hit

Describing the lowest phase of his life, Chahal revealed the depth of his suffering. “There was a time when I cried for hours every day. I could hardly sleep, and the thoughts in my mind became overwhelming. I even considered ending my life,” he admitted.

The cricketer credited his family and close friends, especially RJ Mahvash, for helping him through the darkest days.

Stepping away from the game

Chahal confessed that cricket, his lifelong passion, became hard to focus on during that period. “I asked for a break from domestic cricket, including the Vijay Hazare Trophy. If cricket couldn’t make me happy, I knew something was wrong. I needed time to heal.”

Rumours and public perception

Commenting on the media frenzy and online gossip, Chahal dismissed the false associations that were made simply based on his interactions. “People see you with someone and start assuming things. I know how to respect women—I have two sisters. These baseless rumours really hurt,” he said.

He also addressed the viral moment from his court appearance, where he wore a T-shirt that read “Be your own sugar daddy.” Chahal called it a non-verbal response to certain developments from the other side. “I didn’t want to create drama. But I needed to say something in my own way. It wasn’t meant to insult anyone,” he clarified.

Moving forward with maturity

Despite everything, Chahal said the separation was handled in a calm and mutual manner. “We didn’t fight. We decided to part ways respectfully,” he added.

Currently, Chahal is playing county cricket in England, representing Northamptonshire. He recently impressed with a six-wicket haul (6/118) in the first innings against Derbyshire in the ongoing County Championship Division Two — a welcome return to form for a player who’s now focused on regaining his rhythm, both on and off the field.
