Indian Olympic Association’s Athletes Commission Set for Revival to Amplify Athlete Voices

Bhubaneswar : The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Athletes Commission (AC), after a period of dormancy due to internal challenges, is making a determined comeback under the leadership of MC Mary Kom as chairperson and Sharath Kamal as vice-chairperson. The commission, initially formed with the aim of giving athletes a central voice in sports governance, had seen limited activity for nearly 18 months amid organizational turmoil.

The commission is now reaching out to National Sports Federations to appoint athlete representatives who can serve as liaisons with the IOA AC. The first goal is to activate athlete commissions across as many federations as possible or, where not feasible, at least establish two athlete representatives per federation to communicate with the IOA AC. This grassroots activation is pivotal in ensuring athletes’ perspectives are reflected at every level.

Looking ahead, the AC plans to initiate athlete-centric programs addressing critical areas such as mental health support and career transition guidance. A key campaign is also scheduled for August 29, National Sports Day, engaging elite athletes, Olympians, and retired sports personalities to promote sport among the masses.

The IOA Athletes Commission plays a crucial role in linking athletes, federations, and the Olympic movement, ensuring athletes’ viewpoints are integrated into decision-making. Financial and operational support for the commission is expected to increase as governance issues within the IOA stabilize.

This revival aligns with the broader reforms in the IOA constitution, which now mandates athlete representation with voting rights within the association’s executive bodies, reflecting International Olympic Committee guidelines. The commission includes 10 elected athletes with equal gender representation, including members who have competed in recent Olympic or major international competitions. This structural reform ensures that athletes have a formal and influential role in sports administration in India.

The renewed activity of the Athletes Commission signals a fresh start towards empowering Indian athletes, enhancing their welfare, and strengthening sports governance in the country.
