Indian Chess Contingent Grows: Vaishali and Harika Battle Through Tie-Breaks to Pre-Quarterfinals

Batumi, Georgia– The Indian challenge at the FIDE Women’s World Cup in Batumi, Georgia, continues to strengthen as R. Vaishali and Harika Dronavalli successfully navigated grueling tie-break clashes on Monday. They now join compatriots Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh, completing a quartet of Indian players in the pre-quarterfinals of the prestigious tournament. However, the day also saw the unfortunate exit of Vantika Agrawal.

Vaishali’s Marathon Victory

  1. Vaishali demonstrated immense resilience in her third-round match against USA’s Carissa Yip. After both their classical games ended in a draw, the battle extended into the rapid tie-breaks. The first segment of 15+10 rapid games also concluded with no decisive result. It was in the high-stakes 10+10 rapid games that Vaishali found her winning rhythm, clinching both encounters to secure her spot in the pre-quarterfinals. Her next formidable opponent will be Meruert Kamalidenova of Kazakhstan, who has already created a sensation by knocking out defending champion Aleksandra Goryachkina.

Harika’s Calculated Success

Veteran Indian Grandmaster Harika Dronavalli mirrored Vaishali’s tie-break heroics. She meticulously outplayed Greek player Stavroula Tsolakidou, securing her progression in a similar fashion to Vaishali’s hard-fought victory. Harika now faces a challenging encounter in the next round, as she is set to square off against Russia’s Kateryna Lagno, who advanced at Vantika Agrawal’s expense.

Vantika Agrawal’s Valiant Exit

While the day brought joy for most, it marked the end of the road for Vantika Agrawal. Her match against Kateryna Lagno was a dramatic affair; Vantika had initially stunned Lagno by winning their first classical game. Lagno, however, bounced back strongly in the second game, pushing the contest into tie-breaks. The 15+10 rapid tie-breaks and the first 10+10 tie-break game both ended in draws, showcasing Vantika’s tenacity. Yet, in the decisive second game of the 10+10 tie-breaks, Lagno, playing with the white pieces, secured the win, thus ending Vantika’s promising run in the tournament.

The Road Ahead for the Indian Quartet

With four Indian players now in the pre-quarterfinals, the nation has a strong presence in the later stages of the FIDE Women’s World Cup.

  • Divya Deshmukh, who previously defeated Croatian Teodora Injac, is set for a challenging match against Chinese GM Zhu Jiner.
  • Koneru Humpy, after her victory over Poland’s Klaudia Kulon, will face Switzerland’s Alexandra Kosteniuk.
  • R. Vaishali will take on the giant-killer Meruert Kamalidenova of Kazakhstan.
  • Harika Dronavalli is set for an intriguing clash with Kateryna Lagno.

The upcoming pre-quarterfinal matches promise intense chess action as these talented players vie for a coveted spot in the quarterfinals of the FIDE Women’s World Cup.
