Madrid, Spain – India concluded its campaign at the Archery World Cup Stage in Madrid on Saturday with a haul of three medals, largely thanks to the exceptional performance of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, who contributed to all three podium finishes.
Women’s Compound Team Settles for Silver
India opened its medal account with a silver in the women’s compound team event. The top-seeded trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur, and 16-year-old debutant Prithika Pradeep had led the qualification round with an impressive 2116 points and seemed on track for gold. They held a slender 170-169 lead going into the final end against Chinese Taipei. However, a “nervy finish” saw them post a 55, including a costly 7, allowing Chinese Taipei to clinch the gold with a near-flawless 58, resulting in a 225-227 defeat for India. This outcome once again highlighted the team’s “mental fragility in tight finishes” and the ongoing absence of a compound coach since Sergio Pagni’s departure in 2022.
Mixed Team Bronze and Individual Silver for Jyothi
Jyothi Surekha Vennam continued her strong showing by partnering with Rishabh Yadav to win a bronze medal in the mixed team event. The duo secured a decisive 156-153 victory over El Salvador’s Paola Corado and Douglas Vladimir Nolasco.
Vennam’s impressive run culminated in an individual silver medal after a close 147-148 loss to Britain’s Ella Gibson in the final. Unfortunately, Parneet Kaur was unable to add another medal for India, suffering a 143-146 defeat against Korea’s Han Seungyeon in the bronze medal match.
