Virat Kohli Opens Up On Test Retirement With Humor and Heartfelt Reflections

Bhubaneswar: “When You Colour Your Beard Every 4 Days, You Know It’s Time” – Kohli Breaks Silence at London Charity Gala

In his first public comments since announcing his retirement from Test cricket, Virat Kohli offered a mix of wit, nostalgia, and deep reflection at a charity event hosted by Yuvraj Singh in London. Speaking to a gathering of cricketing greats and fans, Kohli explained his decision with a light-hearted yet revealing remark:
“I just coloured my beard two days ago. When you colour your beard every four days, you know it’s time.”

A Gentle Goodbye After 14 Glorious Years

Kohli’s Test retirement on May 12, 2025, came as a surprise to many, closing a 14-year chapter in which he became one of India’s greatest red-ball cricketers. With 123 Tests, 9,230 runs, and 30 centuries to his name, Kohli exits the format as India’s fourth-highest run-scorer and its most successful Test captain with 40 wins in 68 matches.

At the London gala, Kohli said the decision was both personal and practical:
“You know inside when it’s time to move on. I’ve always followed my instincts.”

Sharing the Stage with Legends

The emotional evening saw Kohli join cricketing stars such as Kevin Pietersen, Chris Gayle, Darren Gough, and Ravi Shastri. But the bond with host Yuvraj Singh stood out most.
“I’ll never forget how Yuvi, Zak, and Bhajji welcomed me when I joined the Test team,” Kohli shared, reminiscing about his early days with the Indian team.
He praised Yuvraj’s battle with cancer and comeback to cricket, calling it one of the most inspiring chapters in Indian sports.

Humour, Wisdom, and a Hint of What’s Next

Though Kohli brought laughter with his beard joke, he also hinted at the physical and emotional demands of the longest format.
“Test cricket demands everything – mentally, physically. I’ve given it my all.”

While he has stepped away from the red-ball format, Kohli is expected to continue his white-ball career and participate in the IPL. He also emphasized his interest in mentoring the next generation, which includes the likes of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Legacy That Transcends Numbers

Kohli’s Test career is marked by aggressive leadership, historic overseas wins, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. From his debut in 2011 to his final innings in January 2025, he has left an indelible mark.
“It’s not just the records,” Kohli said, “it’s the memories, the camaraderie, and the pride of wearing the India cap.”

As fans adjust to the void left behind, Kohli’s words at the gala served as a reminder that while the whites may be off, the legacy lives on.

Kohli’s Test Career At A Glance

Matches: 123

Runs: 9,230

Average: 46.85

Centuries: 30

Double Centuries: 7 (Most by an Indian)

Wins as Captain: 40 in 68 matches

From Beard Dyes to Emotional Tributes, Kohli’s Exit is as Iconic as His Journey.
