India Beat Thailand 2–1 to Qualify for AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026

Chiang Mai : The Indian women’s football team scripted a historic moment on Saturday, defeating hosts Thailand 2–1 in their final Group B match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers to seal a direct berth for the continental tournament. With the victory, India topped their group and qualified for the Asian Cup through the qualification process for the first time in over two decades.

Basfore Rises to the Occasion

Midfielder Sangita Basfore was the standout performer for India, netting both goals in a match filled with intensity and pressure. Her opening goal came in the 28th minute, a powerful long-range effort that stunned the home crowd and gave India an early lead.Although Thailand responded just after the break — levelling the score through a swift move that capitalized on a defensive lapse — India held their nerve. In the 74th minute, Basfore struck again, this time with a perfectly timed header from a corner kick, restoring India’s advantage and ultimately sealing the victory.

A Perfect Campaign

The win completed a flawless campaign for the Blue Tigresses, who had already registered dominant victories over Mongolia (13–0), Timor-Leste (4–0), and Iraq (5–0) in earlier matches. Both India and Thailand had entered the final group clash level on points and goal difference, making it a virtual knockout. But it was India who held their composure when it mattered most.

India’s defense, marshalled with discipline in the closing stages, withstood Thailand’s late attacks and ensured there was no late equaliser. Substitute Anju Tamang nearly added a third in injury time but was denied by the goalkeeper.

Looking Ahead: Australia and Beyond

This qualification marks a significant milestone for Indian women’s football. The last time India reached the AFC Asian Cup via qualification was in 2003. They had participated in the 2022 edition as hosts but were forced to withdraw mid-tournament due to a COVID outbreak. This time, the ticket to Australia is earned — and well deserved.Coach Thomas Dennerby praised the team’s composure and growth, calling it “a turning point” for the squad and for women’s football in India.

With the Asian Cup scheduled for next year in Australia, the team now shifts its focus to preparing for competition against the continent’s elite — and possibly, laying the groundwork for a long-term dream: a maiden appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Final Score:

Thailand 1 – 2 India
