Indian Sports Wrap – June 26: Golden Sweep in Squash Headlines a Day of Triumphs

India enjoyed a glorious day in sports on June 26, with the nation scripting history in squash and delivering strong performances across other disciplines, reflecting a growing wave of athletic excellence.

Historic Triple Gold for India at Asian Doubles Squash Championships

The highlight of the day came from the courts of Johor, Malaysia, where Indian squash players completed a rare golden treble at the Asian Doubles Squash Championships. For the first time ever, India clinched all three gold medals on offer—men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles—a feat that underlines the country’s growing prowess in the sport.

In the men’s doubles final, the pair of Velavan Senthilkumar and Abhay Singh put up a spirited display to overcome Hong Kong’s formidable duo of Andes Ling and Chung Yat Long. The Indians won in straight games, using sharp coordination and dominant net play to outclass their opponents.

Meanwhile, in the women’s doubles, Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal, two of India’s most seasoned squash stars, brought their chemistry and experience to the fore to edge out another Hong Kong pair. Their superior court coverage and attacking strategy saw them lift the title in a thrilling encounter.

The mixed doubles final saw a brilliant performance from Abhay Singh and Joshna Chinappa, who teamed up seamlessly to defeat the Malaysian team. This third gold sealed India’s clean sweep and marked a milestone moment for Indian squash.

India’s Junior Hockey Team Finishes Third

Elsewhere, in a competitive four-nation junior hockey tournament in Dusseldorf, Germany, India finished third, beating South Africa 5-4 in a tense bronze medal match. The tournament featured elite junior sides, and India’s campaign showed promise, especially in attack, with several young players making a mark ahead of future assignments.

Sneha SS Shines on the Track

Indian track and field athlete Sneha SS added to the nation’s athletics laurels by winning a gold medal at the Taiwan Open Athletics Championships, shortly after bagging silver at the Asian Athletics Championships. Her emergence as a top sprinter underscores the depth of India’s women’s track talent ahead of the 2025 World Championships.

Rajasthan Named Host for 2025 Khelo India University Games

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced Rajasthan as the official host of the 2025 Khelo India University Games. The decision is expected to boost sports infrastructure and engagement in the state. Jaipur and Udaipur are likely to be key venues.

From the squash courts of Malaysia to the hockey fields of Europe and the athletics tracks of Asia, June 26 proved to be a landmark day for Indian sport. The historic triple triumph in squash stands out as a testament to India’s rising stature on the international stage and the country’s expanding sporting horizons.
