Vondrousova battles past qualifier Wang to win Berlin Open final

Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova just clinched the Berlin Open title on Sunday, battling through three sets to overcome Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu. This is her first trophy since her incredible Wimbledon triumph two years ago, capping off a truly improbable comeback!

The 25-year-old Czech, who was ranked 164th in the world after a year plagued by injuries, showed immense grit. She saved a remarkable six set points in a nail-biting first-set tiebreak.

Wang Xinyu, the 23-year-old Chinese qualifier, showed incredible composure in her first singles tour final, leveling the match by breaking Vondrousova once in the second set.

However, Vondrousova, who had an incredibly tough road to the final by beating Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the first round and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals, found another gear in the deciding set. She raced ahead with two breaks of her own, surging to a 4-1 lead. She then played a flawless service game at 5-2, sealing the win with a brilliant dropshot, a crosscourt backhand winner, and a powerful forehand that forced an error from Wang on her first match point. What an inspiring return to form for Vondrousova.
