Neeraj Chopra Unleashes 88.16m Thunderbolt in Paris Diamond League

Neeraj Chopra wins first Diamond League title in two years after finishing top in Paris

An emphatic start, a statement of intent, and a signal to rivals ahead of Paris 2024

Neeraj Chopra, India’s Olympic gold medallist and reigning world champion in men’s javelin, delivered a stunning performance at the Paris Diamond League on Friday night, hurling the spear a massive 88.16 metres in his very first attempt. It was a throw that needed no follow-up — and none of his competitors could match it.

That single, sensational launch was enough to seal the top spot for Chopra, as Germany’s Julian Weber came close with 87.88m but could not topple the Indian star. Brazil’s Olympic medallist Luiz Mauricio da Silva finished third with 86.62m, while Czech legend Jakub Vadlejch, a strong contender, had to settle for fourth.

Neeraj fouled three of his six throws, but it didn’t matter. His opening throw was not just technically sound — it was psychologically crushing. Once the 88.16m mark was set, it became a mountain the rest could only attempt to climb.

Speaking after the event, Neeraj said, “I wanted to open strong and that throw came out just right. There’s more in the tank — but I’m happy to get the win and stay injury-free.”

This was Neeraj’s second Diamond League appearance this season and comes just weeks ahead of his homecoming meet — the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru on July 5. Before that, he is set to appear at the Golden Spike Meet in Ostrava on June 24, keeping the competitive rhythm alive before the Paris Olympics.

What stood out in Paris was not just the distance, but the confidence with which Chopra is throwing this year. Having already touched 90.23m earlier in the season in Doha, he’s now finding consistency in the high 80s — a dangerous sign for any rival looking to challenge his Olympic crown.

With the Paris Games around the corner, Neeraj’s timing could not be better. His performance on French soil sent out a loud message: he’s ready to defend his title — and perhaps, chase history with another record-breaking leap.
