Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, the fifth seed, breezed into the quarterfinals of the Nottingham Open on Wednesday. She secured her spot with a confident 6-3, 6-4 victory over Spain’s Cristina Bucsa. The 2021 US Open runner-up truly dominated the first set and then skillfully handled Bucsa’s stronger challenge in the second to seal her place in the final eight.
Up next for the 22-year-old Fernandez is Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine. Yastremska earned her quarterfinal spot after a hard-fought 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win against Croatian qualifier Antonia Ruzic.
Meanwhile, Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova pulled off an impressive comeback, beating fourth seed Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. This marks Sramkova’s first-ever tour-level grass-court quarterfinal! Putintseva had hoped to get revenge for her loss to Sramkova at the Strasbourg Open last month, but despite taking the first set easily, she couldn’t maintain her lead.
Sramkova will now face Czech seventh seed Linda Noskova, who had a more straightforward path to the quarterfinals, winning 6-1, 6-3 against British wildcard Francesca Jones.
