Alexander Zverev suffered a semifinal defeat at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, losing 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) to Alex de Minaur on Saturday. The German is still set to become the world No. 1 on Monday, replacing Jannik Sinner, but will have to wait for another opportunity to celebrate the milestone with a title.
De Minaur Sets Up Alcaraz Final
De Minaur recovered from losing the second set to claim a hard-fought victory. He took an early 3-0 lead in the deciding tiebreak before closing out the match 7-4.
The win also strengthened the Australian’s chances of qualifying for next month’s season-ending ATP Finals.
Zverev, 29, will become the 30th player to reach the top of the ATP rankings. He will also be the oldest first-time world No. 1 since 1974.
De Minaur will face Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday’s final. The Spaniard booked his place with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory over Daniil Medvedev in the other semifinal.
