Five Titles, One Goal: India Ready to Extend Asian Champions Trophy Dominance
Asian Champions Trophy 2026: India Chase a Sixth Title
The Indian men’s hockey team will aim to add another chapter to its remarkable record when the Asian Champions Trophy 2026 begins in Punjab later this month. Five-time champions India have won the title five times since the tournament began in 2011, establishing themselves as the most successful side in the competition’s history.
The ninth edition will take place from October 27 to November 5, with matches scheduled in Jalandhar and Mohali. Playing in Punjab will give Indian hockey supporters an opportunity to watch the defending champions compete on home soil as they target a sixth title.
India’s Five Asian Champions Trophy Titles
2011: A Dramatic Start Against Pakistan
India won the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy in Ordos, China, in 2011. Facing arch-rivals Pakistan in the final, the teams finished goalless in regulation time before India prevailed 4–2 in the shoot-out. The victory gave India the first title in the tournament’s history.
2016: India Beat Pakistan Again
India secured their second crown in Kuantan, Malaysia, in 2016, defeating Pakistan 3–2 in the final. Rupinder Pal Singh, Affan Yousuf and Nikkin Thimmaiah scored for India in a closely contested encounter.
2018: India and Pakistan Share the Title
India’s third title came in Muscat, Oman, in 2018, under unusual circumstances. India and Pakistan reached the final, but persistent rain prevented the match from being completed. Both teams were declared joint winners, adding another championship to India’s record.
2023: India Stage a Stunning Comeback
India captured their fourth title in Chennai in 2023, overcoming Malaysia 4–3 in a thrilling final. Malaysia led 3–1 at half-time, leaving the hosts with a significant challenge.
India responded in the closing stages, with Harmanpreet Singh, Gurjant Singh and Akashdeep Singh scoring in the final 16 minutes to complete a memorable comeback in front of the home crowd.
2024: Jugraj Singh Seals the Defence
India successfully defended their title in Hulunbuir, China, in 2024. In a tight final against the hosts, Jugraj Singh scored the decisive goal to secure a 1–0 victory and deliver India’s fifth Asian Champions Trophy crown.
Can India Make It Six Titles in Punjab?
India’s record reflects their consistency across different editions, venues and opponents. Their victories have come through shoot-out resilience, narrow final wins and dramatic comebacks, demonstrating the team’s ability to handle different kinds of pressure.
The upcoming Asian Champions Trophy 2026 offers another opportunity to build on that legacy. With the tournament returning to India, the defending champions will look to turn home support into another successful campaign.
However, their history alone will not guarantee another title. India will need to deliver consistently against the other contenders, with every match potentially shaping their route to the trophy.
For Indian hockey, the objective is clear: protect their position at the top of the competition’s honours list and become six-time champions. The challenge begins in Punjab on October 27.
