Yuzvendra Chahal has announced his retirement from first-class cricket after completing his final County Championship appearance for Northamptonshire against Middlesex at Lord’s last month.

The India leg-spinner, who has represented the country in 72 ODIs and 80 T20Is, brought an end to a red-ball career spanning 49 matches. He claimed 148 wickets, including six five-wicket hauls.

Chahal described his journey in the format as satisfying, despite never getting the opportunity to fulfil his long-held dream of playing Test cricket for India.

Chahal Ends First-Class Career After Strong County Season

The 2026 season proved a productive one for Chahal at Northamptonshire. He picked up 21 wickets in five matches, including a nine-wicket match haul against Durham.

His final first-class appearance came at the iconic Lord’s, a fitting venue for the conclusion of his red-ball career.

“I played my last First-Class match at Lord’s, saying these words is emotional as a Test cap was always a dream, one that I carried with me for many years,” Chahal wrote in an Instagram post.

“It may not have happened, but I am genuinely content with the journey I have had and incredibly grateful for every opportunity that came my way in this format,” he added.

Chahal Reflects On Red-Ball Cricket Journey

Chahal said first-class cricket played an important role in shaping his approach to the game, teaching him patience and resilience.

“For me, red-ball cricket was never just another format. It was where I learned the meaning of patience, character, resilience and the pure joy of being out there for hours, fighting for every run and every wicket,” he said.

Despite his achievements in domestic and county cricket, Chahal never featured in India’s Test plans. He was, however, selected for India A for a series against South Africa A when then coach Ravi Shastri and captain Virat Kohli were seeking a wrist-spinner.
