India defended their women’s kabaddi title at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, defeating Iran 37-34 in a thrilling final in Nagoya on Saturday to claim a record-extending fourth gold medal in the event.

The Indian team relied on a well-planned strategy to exploit Iran’s vulnerable left flank before using their experience and composure to withstand a late comeback and secure the victory.

The triumph continued India’s dominance in women’s kabaddi, with the team winning gold in four of the five editions since the sport made its Asian Games debut in 2010.

India Exploit Iran’s Weak Left Flank

India entered the final having already defeated Iran in the group stage, where they identified a weakness on the opposition’s left flank.

Raiders Nikita, captain Pooja and Sanju Devi repeatedly targeted that side, putting Iran’s defence under pressure and creating crucial scoring opportunities.

India made a brisk start, taking a 3-1 lead and reducing Iran to three players. However, the Iranians fought back strongly, levelling the scores at 7-7 in a fiercely contested opening phase.

India’s defence played a crucial role in maintaining their advantage, with Pooja leading from the front through her aggression and composure. Nikita and Pooja also contributed important points through their raids.

India secured their only all-out of the first half with six minutes remaining and went into the interval with a 22-16 lead.

Iran Fight Back To Make Final A Thriller

Iran returned with renewed determination after the break, with Atena Madadi and Aynaz Faramarzi troubling the Indian defence through quick movements, sharp feints and effective raids.

India suffered a brief setback when Nikita, their most effective raider on the day, was pinned after an unsuccessful raid and required treatment on the court. She soon recovered and returned to action.

Iran capitalised on the momentum, mounting a strong comeback and inflicting an all-out to close the gap to 28-27.

The sudden shift in momentum turned the final into a tense contest, with India facing mounting pressure from the Iranian challenge.

India’s Experience Proves Decisive In Closing Stages

India responded by tightening their defence and adopting a more cautious approach rather than taking unnecessary risks.

With several players having featured in the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, the Indian team drew on its experience to manage the pressure of the final.

The strategy paid off as India rebuilt their lead, moving ahead 37-31 with just a minute remaining.

Iran launched a final push and reduced the deficit to 37-34, but India held firm to seal the victory.

The final whistle sparked celebrations as India completed another successful defence of their Asian Games women’s kabaddi crown.

Sonali Shingate Explains India’s Winning Strategy

Indian kabaddi stalwart Sonali Shingate said the team had identified Iran’s defensive weakness and used it to their advantage.

“Iran are always a tough competitor when we play against them, and we knew we were in for a fight despite us beating them in the group game here,” Shingate said.

“We attacked them from the weak left flank and that helped us negate them.”

Shingate, a right-flank player, spent much of the final on the bench as India repeatedly targeted Iran from the left.

The victory underlined India’s tactical preparation, the effectiveness of their experienced raiders and their ability to remain composed under pressure in a closely fought Asian Games final.
