Gukesh Below 2700 After Draw in Samarkand
World champion D Gukesh has slipped below 2700 on the live classical rating list after being held to a draw by Indonesia鈥檚 18-year-old International Master Satria Duta Cahaya in Round 2 of the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Samarkand. Gukesh entered the tournament with an official FIDE rating of 2703, but the half-point against Cahaya pushed his live rating below the landmark.
The rating change is only a live-list development; Gukesh鈥檚 official September FIDE rating remains 2703 until the next monthly list is published. His draw came on the third board as India secured a narrow 2.5-1.5 victory over Indonesia.
Gukesh Below 2700 Comes During a Challenging Period
Gukesh’s latest result adds to a difficult stretch in his classical chess campaign. The 20-year-old had started the Olympiad with a win against Thailand鈥檚 Faris Rashid Alriyami, but could not convert his second-round game against Cahaya into another full point.
The Indonesian teenager produced a disciplined defensive display against the reigning world champion. Despite the rating difference, Cahaya managed to hold Gukesh to half a point, leaving India to rely on Nihal Sarin for the decisive result in the team match.
Gukesh Below 2700 as India Continues Title Defence
India entered the Samarkand Olympiad as the defending Open champion, having won the title at the 2024 Budapest Olympiad. The team began its 2026 campaign with a victory over Thailand before edging Indonesia in Round 2.
Nihal produced the only Indian win against Indonesia, recovering from a difficult position against Arif Abdul Hafiz. His victory was enough to secure the team match after the other three boards ended in draws.
Gukesh Below 2700 Before Sindarov World Championship Match
The rating development also comes during the build-up to one of the biggest chess matches of 2026. Gukesh is scheduled to defend his world title against Javokhir Sindarov, who won the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament with a record 10/14 score.
Sindarov has also enjoyed a major rise in the world rankings, reaching the world’s top four after his Candidates triumph. He has previously said that his serious preparation for the World Championship will begin after the Chess Olympiad.
The World Championship is scheduled for November 24 to December 12 in Geneva, where the two 20-year-olds will meet in a 14-game classical match.
Gukesh Below 2700 Adds Another Chapter to 2026
For now, Gukesh’s immediate priority remains the Chess Olympiad rather than the live rating number. India will continue its title defence in Samarkand, while Gukesh will look to build momentum through the remaining rounds before turning his attention to the World Championship.
