India, Japan Set For Historic T20I Clash
The Indian men’s cricket team will face Japan in a historic T20 International on September 22 as part of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations.
India will also compete at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya from September 19 to October 4, with the T20I against Japan providing the team valuable match practice ahead of the quadrennial sporting event.
“The Japan Cricket Association (JCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are delighted to announce that the men’s teams from each nation will play a T20 International match to launch the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of India-Japan Diplomatic Relations,” the BCCI said in a statement.
The match will be played for the Suzuki Cup at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture.
T20I To Launch ‘Sport 75’ Initiative
The fixture will mark the beginning of “Sport 75”, an initiative aimed at strengthening sporting ties and promoting greater people-to-people exchanges between India and Japan.
“The match will be the first step of ‘Sport 75’, an initiative that stems from an agreement reached during a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and aims to promote human exchanges and cooperation between India and Japan in the field of sports,” the BCCI statement added.
The initiative also takes into account India’s ambition to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.
India Gain Match Practice
For India, the match will serve as an important preparation opportunity ahead of their Asian Games campaign.
The Indian men’s team will be in Japan for the continental multi-sport event, with the T20I against the hosts offering the players an opportunity to adapt to local conditions before the tournament gets underway.
The contest will also provide a significant platform for Japan’s cricket team to test itself against one of the world’s leading cricketing nations.
The India-Japan fixture is expected to add another sporting dimension to the long-standing diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
