The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former South African first-class cricketer Mike Smith as the national team’s all-format batting coach on a two-year contract.
Smith will link up with the Pakistan squad in England ahead of the upcoming three-match Test series, marking the start of his new role with the national side.
Smith Earns Promotion After PSL Success
A Level-4 qualified coach, Smith has built extensive coaching experience in the Pakistan Super League and most recently served as batting coach of the Multan Sultans during the 2026 season.
His appointment comes after former Pakistan batter Asad Shafiq had been serving as interim batting coach during the team’s tours of Bangladesh and the West Indies following Hanif Malik’s departure after the T20 World Cup.
PCB Targets Batting Revival
Pakistan have struggled with batting consistency, particularly in Test cricket, where repeated collapses have contributed to disappointing results over the past two seasons.
The PCB will hope Smith’s arrival brings greater stability to a batting unit that has remained one of the team’s biggest concerns.
Pakistan have previously appointed several overseas coaches, including Gary Kirsten, Jason Gillespie, Steve Rixon and Dav Whatmore, though many of those tenures ended prematurely following disagreements with the board or mutual separations.
