Punjab sprinter shatters national record at Federation Cup in Ranchi
Gurindervir Singh etched his name into Indian athletics history after clocking a sensational 10.09 seconds in the men’s 100m final at the Federation Cup Athletics Championships in Ranchi. The blistering run made him the first Indian athlete to break the 10.10-second barrier in the event.
The remarkable performance came just a day after Gurindervir had briefly held the national record with a timing of 10.17 seconds during the semifinal heats.
Dramatic rivalry with Animesh Kujur lights up Federation Cup
The Federation Cup witnessed a thrilling duel between Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur over two days in Ranchi. After Gurindervir’s 10.17-second effort in the semifinals, Kujur responded almost immediately by clocking 10.15 seconds to reclaim the national record.
However, Gurindervir bounced back in emphatic fashion in the final, reclaiming the record with his historic 10.09-second sprint. Kujur finished second in the race with a time of 10.20 seconds, while Pranav Promod secured third place with 10.29 seconds.
Qualification boost for Commonwealth and Asian Games
The Federation Cup also served as a qualification event for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Gurindervir’s record-breaking run comfortably secured qualification standards for the upcoming international competitions.
The rivalry between Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur is now being viewed as a major turning point for Indian sprinting, with both athletes pushing national standards to unprecedented levels.
