Julius Yego’s remarkable story gained another unforgettable chapter on Sunday as the Kenyan javelin icon captured a historic sixth gold medal at the African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.

At 37 years old, Yego once again proved that experience, resilience and determination can still conquer elite competition. The Kenyan veteran produced a winning throw of 79.87 metres to defend his title and further cement his place among Africa’s greatest-ever field athletes.

As the winning throw landed, Yego raised his arms toward the crowd in celebration while teammates rushed to congratulate him near the runway. The emotional moment reflected the extraordinary longevity of an athlete who has remained at the top of African javelin for well over a decade.

Known globally as the “YouTube Man” because he famously taught himself technique by studying online videos early in his career, Yego has become one of Kenya’s most inspiring sporting figures. His rise from humble beginnings to world champion and Olympic silver medallist transformed him into a symbol of perseverance across global athletics.

The latest gold medal now adds another milestone to an already historic career. Yego previously won African titles in 2012, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2024, making this sixth continental crown a remarkable achievement in an event demanding both power and technical precision.

The final itself was interrupted by rain and difficult conditions, but Yego’s composure and experience proved decisive. While younger competitors struggled to maintain rhythm on the slippery runway, the Kenyan veteran remained calm and executed his throws with trademark consistency.

For Kenya, the victory carried huge significance beyond the individual achievement. The country has traditionally dominated middle and long-distance running, but Yego’s continued excellence in a field event remains a rare and celebrated source of national pride.

The veteran has repeatedly battled injuries during the later stages of his career, including serious setbacks that many believed could end his time at the top level. Yet he has continued returning to major championships with the same determination that once made him world champion in Beijing in 2015.

Earlier this month, Yego had openly spoken about targeting a sixth African title and potentially extending his career toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Sunday’s victory showed he still believes he can compete among the world’s best.

Fans and fellow athletes applauded warmly as Yego completed his final throw of the evening, recognising not only another gold medal but the sustained excellence of one of Africa’s most respected athletes.

In an era where sporting careers often fade quickly, Julius Yego continues to endure — still competing, still inspiring and still making history.
